ROBERT W MCGRAIL  COMPUTER SCIENCE  MATHEMATICS  SCIENCE  BARD COLLEGE

Seminar Policies

Format:  The course meets on Mondays from 5-7 PM.  The time from 6-7 PM will be reserved for one 60 minute or two 30 minute formal presentations.  The 5-6 PM slot will be dedicated to administrative issues (announcements) and short, informal presentations of research in progress.

Formal Presentations:  Every student participant in the seminar is required to give a formal presentation of research in computer science or mathematics.  This presentation must be at least 30 minutes in length.  Seniors are expected use this as an opportunity to present senior project prospectus talks.  Underclassmen are encouraged to present the results of their summer research and/or develop new research projects this semester with a Bard faculty member.  On the other hand, a junior or sophomore may give an expository talk on some advanced topic, but this also needs to happen under the watchful eye of some Bard faculty member.

A student who presents poorly and appears to have a poor understanding of their topic will not receive credit for that presentation.  Any student who is absent for their own formal presentation will receive a failing grade for the course.

Informal Presentations:  The informal presentations are an opportunity for students to receive feedback on their research and hone their presentation skills.  Senior project students are encouraged to make informal presentation a regular part of their process of choosing and investigating a project topic.  There is no fixed length for informal presentations.

Attendance:  Since skipping someone else's presentation cannot be "made up", student attendance at meeting times is mandatory.  Of course, extenuating circumstances often arise, so each student is allotted three free absences.   Moreover, no one is allotted four absences.  Simply put, anyone missing as many as four meetings has missed too much of the course to receive credit.

Hence in order to satisfy the attendance requirement of this course, a student must attend all but at most three full meeting times.  In other words, anyone missing at least four meetings will receive a failing grade.

Grading:  This course will be graded Pass/Fail.  A Pass will be granted to precisely those who have met the attendance and formal presentation requirements.
